Possible new server in the works.

Post by robert.harju »

Hello all!

Here is the rundown (vaguely) of what I am up to with creating a new server.

Hardware specs:
Basic server with Win 7 - only due to the fact that when I work, I no longer have the time to debug and recompile with Linux.
Dual-core 2.7Ghz AMD 64 bit
2GB RAM (upgrading soon... possibly by the time anyone reads this)
Connection speed of (consistent) 35d/l - 5u/l. Of which, 1.5m/b each direction will be dedicated to the server, until speeds need to increase.

U/O Server setup:
Here is where the fun starts. Being one who had played the game at the start and experienced the start of player run servers (shards) as well, I ventured into server creation while younger. Due to the inability to procure stable connections through the years it was never something that seemed possible. Now seems the time, though the game does not have the following it once did, to get the ball rolling.

This server will be something new that has been an idea bounced around for a long time by many people, with no fruition as of yet. I have already started to create the world, using the basic world files for signage/maps and creating spawn/NPC areas manually. It is time consuming but, the payout in the end should be something fairly neat. The actual creation of the world is not something that annoys me. Currently not working so, in a matter of days, I should be ready to have people possibly help stress test it? Already about 3 days into creation and will also start to decorate it as people start to come in. The world will be constantly changing and it would be great to have outside input on what needs done and where? There is a basic story to the world, which is in the outline phase right now. In my head... just needs penned.

Anyway, long-winded. Lots to get out of my head but, not enough time to type it all out... gotta walk the dog while the sun is out!

Feel free to message me with any ideas or questions.

Spawns / NPCs in 5 towns total are complete... Including Britt. and Trinsic already. May be on track to get people online by this weekend...

So, if anyone objects to my updating or this post entirely, please let me know. If not, I will update daily on my progress. So, without further delay, here is what is accomplished as of today:

- Towns are NPC filled and have spawners setup around all towns. - Took a good chunk of one day
- Dungeons are coming along nicely. Already have two filled up this morning. Will work more this evening after running errands.
- Next step is to complete the dungeon spawn points and then start filling the world with animals and creatures / NPCs and get the storyline setup.

Server has been online solid for 3 days without crashing. The worldsave file is getting quite large as the hours progress.

Well, sooner than expected, ready to have people test out the connection if they would care to do so. Just message me with a desired username/password and I will reply with the IP address when able to do so.

Daily updates sound great :) For the purposes of making testing easier for people (and to remove one barrier of entry - having to wait for manual account creation), you might want to enable the automatic creation of new accounts when people try to login, then go back to manual accounts later on if that's preferable for you. Post IP, then encourage people to provide feedback either on your server using /reportbug <text> command, in this thread, private messages to you, etc.

Auto create is now enabled. IP - 50.137.163.78 Port - 2593

Please bear in mind, this is only after two days of working on it... ANYONE that is ingame at the same time I am working, will be rewarded handsomely... for a short time.

Thank you for the heads up Xuri. Checked the account creations this morning after waking up and, it is up to 9 total accounts. Glad to see people are even logging in to view the server.

Anyone that has an account, and a character in an easy to find location, may see some additions to what they left the game with. Enjoy and please place responsibly... NO housing in town... it will be removed with all items disappearing.

When I decide to make the server "Official", the actual storyline will come out and the world will "start anew". NO stats will be wiped and housing will be left (if placed correctly). Just kind of a "spawn reset".

Please, don't hesitate to message me with any insight to the server. Connection speed, spawn layout, requests, ideas? Also, anyone willing to help build the world, within certain parameters, is welcome to join the team!

*Edit* - There will be some "soft resets" throughout the buildup of the server. If you loose connection at any time, please email me if it lasts for more than a few minutes. I have remote login and can access my network from anywhere to get it back online.

Might give it a try this weekend if I can get some free time. What type of server are you shooting for? PnP? Original OSI? Roleplay? Complete sandbox?

Do I have to start from scratch and spend 250 hours chopping wood to get anywhere and set macros to hit target dummies? (Boy were those the good o'l day!)

I took the server down for the better part of the past week. No one logged into it for quite some time, and I have been working on my vehicles prepping for winter. Also some remodeling on the house needed completed. Anyway, now that all of that is done...

Server is back online and will stay that way. My power bill went up $10/mo by having this on last month.. but, that is the price we pay to have fun :). The world is coming along sloooooowwwwwly. Running through the dungeons and manually adding all of the spawn points (yes, every single last one) is a bit tedious.

The world will be somewhat like the orig. OSI servers from around 1999 or 2k. I loved the way the servers played out "back in the day" and hope others do as well. Would love to be able to sustain around 50 concurrent players at all times in the world. Can only dream though ;)

Just went out and got more RAM for the server as well, jumping from 2gb to 8gb (max that will work). Hope that this may solve some of the latency issues experienced during a stress test a few weeks back. I am seeing only 5% CPU and sustaining at 15% mem usage... Should speed things up quite a bit. Also disabled the wifi in my house so that (even though it was secured and not broadcasting) nobody is able to ping it and try to flood from the area... damn leeches.

Anyway, if anyone has questions, please feel free to email me or message. Email is the best though, as I respond quicker. robert.harju@gmail.com
