The never ending NOOB questions!

Post by randomlyepic »

Okay I am of course brand new to this and I have gotten as far as to load the client and server, log in, and extract the standard world files to the server that I have local right now. I am logged in and created a charter that is a GM but I am unable to walk off of the Moonglow dock giving the message:

Warning: Invalid land access, the offending land number is 64256

To start I chose the default land package not the commmunity one. I am interested in the main differences between the two though. Also in running this server is there a way to have your shard be up to the most current OSI stuff that is available and edit from there?

Also, when I go into the accounts.ini file to change my GM account name and PW it will let me edit it without any issue at all but when I attempt to save the information and then login with it, it will revert back to the admin/admin login. Then when I reopen the file that I just edited it will be back to the default.

To say in advance any and all help that I get from you all over the next couple weeks I greatly appreciate.

For the unable to walk off the dock issue. I think it is because it is not finding 0-4 Legacymap.muls. Everything else when I launch works just fine but for some reason those are missing and I am not sure what I have done wrong.

Okay to further add to my journey thus far I was able to see that likely the issue with my map.mul files is that my client that I am running is too new. I have uninstalled and and downloaded a client installer from yalls site to check out and see if that works.

I know that I do not want it to patch beyond a certain point I am just hoping there will be something to indicate what version it is patching.

Hello, and welcome :)

For details on client compatibility with UOX3, check this thread:
UO client versions/expansions and compatibility with UOX3
I would stick to clients below 7.0.24.0 myself, though it should work with clients up to 7.0.25.0 without major problems. Higher than that, though, and you start running into trouble, having to find ways to convert the .uop map-files into classic .mul formats, etc.

When it comes to the account-editing problems you had, make sure that you do any changes in the account-files while UOX3 is shut down. It's possible it can be done while it's running if you use some specific console-menu options, but it's safest to do it while UOX3 isn't running.

As for the community spawn files and the default world files - you can use both! One (the community spawn files) is a .DFN file that will populate your server with basic NPCs (vendors, monsters, townspeople, etc), while the other (the default world files) will give you a starting point when it comes to world-decorations (plants, signs, doors, bookshelves, other such things).

Alright so I completely removed and reinstalled UO using the installer from Patch 7.0.24. This time when I launch the server I am able to see that all of the mul files but 4 and 5 are there but there are 6 different mapdif files that are now saying not found.

Also once the world gets done loading it will begin to loop all sorts of invalid land access errors.

[directories]
{
DIRECTORY=./
DATADIRECTORY=C:\Games\Electronic Arts\Ultima Online Classic\
DEFSDIRECTORY=./dfndata/
BOOKSDIRECTORY=./books/
ACTSDIRECTORY=./accounts/
SCRIPTSDIRECTORY=./js/
BACKUPDIRECTORY=./archives/
MSGBOARDDIRECTORY=./msgboards/
SHAREDDIRECTORY=./shared/
ACCESSDIRECTORY=./accounts/
HTMLDIRECTORY=./html/
LOGSDIRECTORY=./logs/
DICTIONARYDIRECTORY=./dictionaries/
}

Those are my data paths in my ini file.

Once I logged into the client again I am able to see that it patched to 7.0.29 so I guess there is some point that I am supposed to be able to tell when I need to stop the patching. I will try to reinstall it once more.

Update: I must just not be doing something right when I am installing the UO client bc there doesn't seem to be a way to prevent it from patching up to the version that does not work right with the map.mul files

In the past it was possible to see in the patcher each version as it was being downloaded and patched, which made it possible to abort said patching by closing the patcher-program using the Windows Task Manager (CTRL+Alt+Delete -> Task Manager). This might no longer be the case, so after re-installing, you might want to try avoiding patching altogether.

Yea and you used to be able to skip patching without any issues but not it seems that the patcher that is available now you have the Play button that is greyed out til it finished what it wants to do. Then you have the Cancel button which does not cause the client to open. Any other ideas how to get around that?

What seems to happen when I run the installer it will load a very small version of the client and then the patcher will download like everything else for the game after that. Just need to figure out a way to stop it when I want.

I have found another private shards post about the issue that I am having. I did not want to immediately post it on here because I don't know how yall feel about posting other site links.

If you don't mind I would be happy to post it because I have a good feeling that this will take care of the issue.

Lol well unfortunately when you get that installed you can't even begin to follow the steps bc it wont even start the patcher to begin with. So I am back to square 1 on how to get the patching to stop where I want it to.

You mentioned avoiding patching all together, I would be happy to do that but like I mentioned above it seems to install a very small version of the client then downloads the main files from the patcher, then at some point starts to patch. How would I get around that, I would hope that I am possibly not the first person to put up a server since this new patching system came?!?

Hm. Check out the links in this thread. There should be versions available that will install the whole client to begin with - though they might not be of the very most recent ones. :/

Howdy! I just started as well and experienced much the same frustration. The client that you can download from Ultima is already too recent and will simply update or not work. The only work around I have found is finding a pre .24 client from a third party source. Ultima sends you straight to .29. Don't even bother trying to stop the update because you have an inoperable client.

I was stuck at the docks as well and received the same error even when I thought I was running earlier versions. Now I am hunting through the posts trying to find the most complete monster and decor files I can.
