Which file are you editing? You should be editing accounts.adm only, the rest gets created and updated automatically.

I doubt starting from scratch will help things any.

Based upon what you pasted to the forum, you are changing the uad file for the account, rather than the accounts.adm itself.

(Shameless Plug) Perhaps you might want to give this utility a try to assist you in the setup of your accounts.

Forgive me for differing with you Giwo, I decided to start from scratch. I wiped what I had and had a re think. I have been successful in making my own server, this I did by altering the "Admin" account to suit my needs.

Great....

I was able to log in and wonder around. Of course I can see that there's much to do. There's no spawn, doors..... there's nothing. I can see that there's various add ons that I can use to give me what I need.

But this kind of leads onto another question:

Educate me

1) Why don't use guys post up successful shards ( or the coding to them) for the use of people who join UOX? like I've said early... I often miss the point about things. so I might be missing it here.

2) I can see from when I was searching through the site last night at work, that some of you guys are indeed very clever young men, to which you should be proud.... However, not all of us are as bright as some of you guys (me :) ) and it would be great if this was simplified. I know for your particular levels of expertise that you would consider this to be simple enough, but for us yoghurts out there ( there's more of us than there are of you lol) if it were streamlined down to a simple click and follow type set up, I'm sure that in the long term you would be attracting a LOT more potential players to join the site. Just my two penneth worth, not meant as a did. You see this for me was a total nightmare, but be shear force of will and a great desire to replay UO the way I want, made me put the effort in.... but it's a struggle.

I will be posting more and more until I get this right, I hope you guys don't mind.... and I think you all for your efforts to help me thus far.

Regards

I've wanted to create an "installer" for Windows users which would perform the basic setup. But that is a more difficult task thank you might think.

In the mean time, we do have several utilities which (I feel) make shard setup and management easier. Check out the Tools & Utilities forum.

Well, some of it is already shared :)

There's The Script Vault, where people can share (and some have) scripts they've created. There's the three links under the "UOX3 Worldfiles / Spawns"-section of the Downloads-page, which link to stranf's world starter-kit (his own shard basically!), a community-made spawn.dfn for filling your shard with vendors and monsters, and something called "Default UOX3 worldfiles" which are worldfiles (need to replace your own, so good base to start from instead of patching in later somehow) with basic decorations for your world (including doors and signs).

If you have any concrete suggestions on improvements we can make to the "newbie experience" though, please - let us know! :)

Well guys, I've come to the conclusion that this is a LOT harder than I imagined it to be. I'm not technically minded and result that I've achieved have fallen well short of my expectations. All I ended up with was a buggy world, with creatures that didn't want to attack me back, with commands that seemed "unknown" and many other things that are too numerous to mention and I honestly don't think its fair to keep bugging you guys for answers.

I honestly thought that this was going to be a literally "plug and play" type game.... it isn't, in fact it's too damned hard for an old timer like me to get into.

It looks like UO and I have to part company, which is damned sad, because I really wanted to be able to play again. What I might do is search for a player run server that can offer me something near what I was hoping to achieve here.

If you can give me one final piece of advice, that would be:

Player run server.... Prefer PVE.... recommend any?

As for now, I will take my leave from you fine people and once again offer sincere thanks for all you've done for me.

And if any of you happen to join World of Warcraft... Horde side on the Ravencrest server, please feel free to ask for any help, as I am the guild master of a large raiding guild there.

Our website is at : www.duskronin.net for more info.

So long guys.

finally, once again I want to thank all of you who replied to my requests for help and I wish you good luck in your ongoing endeavours.

questions:

1) What is PvE? I have heard of PvP, but not PvE. My shard is heavy roleplay, and we totally enjoy it. Stranf's Worldfile could possibly double as a nice PvP shard because of our alternative weapon balances, but no one has tried it yet. My players and I all upgraded from NWN to UO, finding that Uox3 actually does story-driven GM-controlled quests much easier and faster than NWN with it's D&D interface and toolset. And this is not a knock on NWN, but a compliment to UOx3 once you get past the learning curve.

2) Since you have made it so you CAN log into UOx3 already, you can basically copy Stranf's worldfile into your UOx directory and all of the scripts etc. should work right up. It seems you are playing with an admin account. The monsters won't attack you and you won't die. I remember when I did the same thing. It's easy to fix, and then you'll find you will aquire more res-robes than you can deal with!

Uox isn't the easiest to get running, but once it is it is very rewarding and flexible. My shard is still running after a few years and has only gotten better, bigger, and more stable as time has gone on.

Don't quit yet! None of us here mind problems. If you look at me, I am approaching 800 posts and most of them have been "bothering" Grimson, Giwo, Xuri, Marc, and the other die-hard dev crew members.

They haven't run me out of town yet, and they most certainly won't run you out of town.

We might be slow on the replies, but we are polite and dedicated to watching others enjoy UOx3 as much as we have.

So keep asking questions and we most certainly will get your shard up and rolling how YOU want it.

8)

In light of your reply, you've given me encouragement to carry on.

I will have a rethink about the way I'm doing this and start from scratch (again lol).

This time I'll try to organise things a little better my end.

Thank you for you kind words Mr Stranf

One of the unfortunate things about myself, is my dyslexia.

One of the (for me) unfortunate things about this site is there's not really a step by step structure, so I get easily misdirected... I end up downloading everything, and getting myself into a mess lol.

I would love to see a "Do this first, then this then this"..... but seeing as I'm probably the only one who has this problem, I'll guess I'll just try to muggle my way through it... but it does make it hard for me... But hey, this is my problem and nothing you guys have done.

So, back to the drawing board :)

During the week I don't have much time because of real life, but I'll get to work on posting some sort of beginning tutorial.

I had a similar struggle to get UOx3 working correctly, but once I did it all came together and I figured out how everything worked (having a little computer/electrical engineering background didn't hurt either.)

I then helped my cousin get (who is a music major of all things) get the shard up and running on his PC when I was on a network that disallowed private port-forwarding. It had to run on his PC in order for any of us to play.

He got the hang of it to, after a few frusterating moments that we all go through. Now not only can he run the shard, but he can control a quest as a GM using all of the "obscure" commands prefixed by the apostrophe.

Getting the shard loaded, an account created, and logging in from a remote PC somewhere in the world is the most difficult part of UO.

I'll see what I can do about writing a tutorial on how to get Xuri's worldfile and/or Stranf's worldfile loaded and operating on a simple shard.
