as I am a noob, I have some more questions. maybe you can help me. I played on an uo-shard for a while but have no knowledge about the tecnical stuff, building a shard or creating a whole world...
1) all this versions from the first uox to uox3 are trying to get as near to the original uo as possible - is this correct? so the next uox4 will support some more features, wich you can find in the original uo?
2) Generally when I want to make an uo-shard. what kind of hardware is necessary? (RAM, CPU, HD...) Is it makeable with my privat-PC or only on one of these servers you can rent for money?
3) Are there some special things I have to know about patching UO or updating to new uox-versions? I just imagine building my uo-world, investing much time just to hear that with the new update (patch or wathever...) it will not work.
thx
some more questions from a noob

1) UOX3 versioning makes little sense. There is still no 1.0 release or milestones for a 1.0 release. I'd say given the move to scripting UOX3 1.0 (for the server) would likely be some sort of cleaned up/modernized version, and then scripts, worldfiles, etc. would be required to implement the desired level of OSI/EA/Whatevertheyarecalledthesedays features. From what I remember the goal of UOX3 has been to meet approximately UO:Ren levels of functionality, so I guess if it completely met that goal, that would also be UOX3 1.0.
As far as I'm aware, there are no plans for a UOX4. UOX4 would most likely represent a whole new project with a new direction, which in my understanding is what UOX3 was to UOX2/UOX.
2) I used to have some help files laying around with "required/recommended" specs that were considered fair values. There were very low in terms of current hardware. I have no idea what the current SVN would require. I would hazzard a guess that UOX3 will run well for 1-2 clients on anything greater than a Pentium2-233 class machine (say 64MB of RAM). Basically any recent PC should have absolutely no problem running the UOX3 server and a UO client, and recieving connections from several other clients.
If you are looking to increase player numbers beyond a handful, then you will need to scale server hardware appropriately. There are also issues of bandwidth, uptime, etc if you are running a shard for a number of players, in which case you may need to investigate some sort of hosted server environment.
3) I'm not familiar with recent UO clients, so I can't comment on that aspect.
Overall the current state of UOX3 is fairly stable (possibly in part due to low development activity), so there should be minimal issues in upgrading the server itself. I would like to see any future "world breaking" changes to include tool support for converting old formats to new formats where technically possible, but this being a hobby project, that may or may not happen.
