Stuck at Startup :)

Post by Hunter »

Ok, hi all. I am new to this but have wanted to try it out for sometime. I played UO back around 1999-2000 and never forgot how special it was. I then found free shards a few years back and dabbled. More recently I just left EA yet again and am hoping to put together a world where I can live in peace, hunt for glory, ... and maybe invite a friend or three.

I have some computer knowledge but more on the hardware side. I did manage to follow the directions (or so I thought), but when I got to using the command prompt “C://UOX3/uox3.exe” minus the quotes I ended up with “ERROR: Shared directory ./shared/ does not exist”.

I started by downloading the All-In-One package dated 01/17/09. I extracted and selected C:\UOX3 as the location for the files. I got to “Configuration Settings”.

Next I decided to leave the Name and IP alone as I can change that later and am going to just use this myself right now and will have both the server and client on one computer.

Configuration Step 2- Datadirectory Path may be where I need guidance. Right now this step looks like this for me : “DATADIRECTORY=C:\Program Files\EA Games\Ultima Online 9th Anniversary Collection\”

Then I set a new password and began to think this might be doable…
I hit Start and Run and enter “C://UOX3/uox3.exe” as I said earlier and then I get stuck with the bit about “./shared/” does not exist. I will comment that I see what appears to be a “file” named “shared” in the UOX3 folder; it has 0 KB. Is that an issue?

Hopefully this is not to uncommon a problem for first timers and I do appreciate any guidance. Thanks and hopefully I can join the ranks of UO diy’ers myself real soon.

Howdy, and welcome to the forums and the world of UOX3!

Firstly, when configuring the ini files, be sure to use forward slashes and include the trailing slash.

E.g. DATADIRECTORY=C:\Program Files\EA Games\Ultima Online 9th Anniversary Collection\ should be DATADIRECTORY=C:/Program Files/EA Games/Ultima Online 9th Anniversary Collection/

Secondly, the shared folder is where the exe should be looking as it will store the saved files there, but its strange that it wouldnt find it. Try deleting the folder and creating a new one in its place with the same name. If that doesn't work, try mapping the ini location to it directly, or perhaps even a seperate folder if you wish like c:/uox3saves/ or such.

Otherwise, try unpacking and overwriting the exe from the zip file again and see if that clears it up..perhaps it was a bad unzip?

Note that if you've successfully unzipped the download, your UOX3 folder should contain a number of subfolders, including the /shared/ folder. Folders it should contain (plus additional subfolders inside some of these):

UOX3/accounts/
UOX3/archives/
UOX3/books/
UOX3/dfndata/
UOX3/dictionaries/
UOX3/docs/
UOX3/help/
UOX3/html/
UOX3/js/
UOX3/logs/
UOX3/msgboards/
UOX3/shared/

RP- “It was quiet. My first moments in Sosaria. The gods had loaded my trusty pack with gold coin at least, and I quickly lit the beeswax candle. Regeants! Ginseng, Mandrake, Ash, …Oh, this is going to be a good adventure I thought to myself. Suddenly a teaspoon of breath escaped me and there was a shimmering all around that made it seem as if all the world was submerged under water. A little unnerved, as I looked up to the sky I saw in giant green letters “World Save” and then the shimmering and the words were gone and quickly gathering my wits I was left rummaging for a dagger that I knew must be here somewhere…”

Ok, thanks so much to both Jediman and Xuri. I had tried reversing the forward slash as I had noticed the discrepancy but when that didn’t help I put them back. I have since changed them again as per Jedi’s instructions. I noticed after unzipping again that the “shared” I had was very distinctly a file, not a folder. Also I checked Xuri’s list and I did have all the others. Only “shared” was not next to a yellow folder. It was next to an icon that was as a white piece of paper with an edge turned over and a window with icons on it. I deleted the file. I then created a new folder and named it “shared” and used the run command and it worked! Which is to say I got to the next part of the instructions.

(On an aside, can either of you tell me how to bring up the downloads window so I can try again to unzip things? I got there by using search. But I imagine there is an easier way? Fyi, I mostly use FireFox.)

I did notice a few things I would like to share in the spirit of pitching in. I do hope it will not come across as nitpicking of any kind. I just thought you would want to know…

First thing I noticed is that on the UOX3 -Configuring the Client- page under “Configuring Razor” it says :

If you're running the UO client on the same computer as your UOX3 shard, enter 127.0.01 as IP and 2953 as port.

I believe it should read 127.0.0.1

I.e. The decimal is missing. It seemed to work better after I changed that.

On the same note, the instructions given under the “Configuring ConnectUO” (which are listed as out of date) are similar but are correct in that 127.0.0.1 is listed as such and what is important is that this is also where I picked up that the port should be 2593. Not the 2953 listed under the instructions for “Configuring Razor”. That gave me some trouble also.

With those changes made I got welcomed to the default UOX3 world and was able to create a character. As soon as I showed up though, there was a message I had used the wrong password. I was disconnected.

I tried again and my character was saved and I was in. Hooray!

Tomorrow… Populating my world. J

Thanks so much.

Hi Hunter!

Glad to hear it's now working!

Great catch on the instructions for Razor by the way! We are always happy to correct any mistakes and welcome input and feedback from everyone :)

Xuri I'm sure can correct those (as he's got fixing privs to the site and all :-P ).

Sounds like the shared directory is just a shortcut. I'll re-download the zip file tonight and take a closer look at it.

For Firefox, to grab the downloads window, go to Tools->Downloads while in the browser :)
