Newb Questions!

Post by Osprey »

Can GMs move stuck chars?

I got my shard working - thanks Xuri. I got a char to Papua and left the mage shop to head to the bank, whilst crossing the swamp area at the rear of the mage shop I found that I couldn't get out (sides too steep?). So I got my GM char to come and help EXCEPT How do you move a stuck char? I couldn't work it out, so I sent the char to Jail, went to the Jail to release him and got the response that the char was not imprisoned. I ended up deleting the char and starting it again. Is there a detailed FAQ/essay on GM abilities with regards to helping chars?

GMs and setspawner. Do the spawners that GMs set become visible to all?

I set one near Moonglow and a char on another account could see it. Do they decay when the server is closed? If so how does one set a permanent spawn aside from doing it individually by the GM.

Scribe chars.

Can you create the scribe chars that inhabit the Lycaeum in Moonglow (they aren't listed in the GMMenu). I am looking for an inscription pen - can I add one to the Mages for sale inventory ?

I am sure there will be more to follow.

Thanks in advance.

Things like tinkers tools and Paladin spellbooks are giving me the following message:

"You can't think of a way to use that item."

Do they need to be activated somehow. I notice that spellbooks and smiths hammers work fine.

Mining and smelting.

I was mining near Minoc (mining camp) and smelting as I was going - firstly I got all different colours of metal from the one spot and secondly when I smelted Iron and Dull Copper it appears the Dull Copper combines with the Iron and I now have heaps of Dull Copper and no Iron. Is this normal?

There are ways. You can use a command called 'WHOLIST (with an optional argument: ON/OFF) to manipulate characters from a distance. You can use 'XTELE to teleport an object or a character to a new location. You can use the 'XGO x y z command to move a character to a specific location. Check the Command List for details.

Oh, and if you can repeat the failed "Jail & release" bug again, please post it in the Bugs forum.

Hmm they shouldn't be visible to players. But try to do 'SET VISIBLE 2 on the spawner-items, and they should be hidden from view of normal players. Note that any characters you make on the admin account will see them, whether you do 'MAKE GM on them or not. Also check the decay-status of the item by doing 'TWEAK and looking at the "DECAY" or "DECAYABLE" value for it. 0 means it won't decay.

Ah, it seems there are none, yes. You can create a new vendor NPC by adding one to the male/femalevendors.dfn files in DFNDATA\NPC\. Just copy & paste the entire section of another NPC in there and modify the relevant bits like the name/ID in the [section header] and the SHOPLIST - which refers to a specific list of items from DFNDATA\ITEMS\shoplist.dfn. Incidentally there's one called "ScribeShopping" so just set SHOPLIST=ScribeShopping to your new vendor and he'll sell both scrolls and pens. You could also just add that last line there to the mage-vendors, not sure if it works with multiple shoplists for a single NPC but give it a try.

To add a pen & ink item manually, either do it through the 'ADD menu in SKILLS -> TOOLS -> INSCRIPTION, or use 'ADD 0x0fc0

The Paladin (and Necromancer) spellbooks aren't implemented in UOX3 yet.

Actually, that sounds like a bug. Post it in the bug-forum please :)

I managed to get the NPC setup in the dfn files but of course it doesn't come up in the ADD GMMenu so I tried to add the NPC maually but must have got the syntax wrong. I tried using your guide for adding custom NPCs. No luck yet.

Can I add it to the GMMenu easily as I'd probably like to add some to Wind and Magincia later.

On a different but similar situation I placed some mages in Encyclopaedia Magicka in Moonglow and they keep disappearing (I found them in papua) as apparently the transporter works just by crossing it.

PS I'm having a ball setting up my shard!

To add something to the ADD-menu, you must add it to the ItemMenu.bulk.dfn file under the apropriate menu-section. You can edit/add new menu-sections by editing ItemMenu.dfn.

To spawn an NPC manually, use 'ADD NPC <section name>
Example:
'ADD NPC orcishmage
'ADD NPC f_provisioner
(female provisioner vendor)

Basically the header or ID of an NPC is defined in the DFNs like:

Code: Select all

[orcishmage]
{
stuff
}

[f_provisioner]
{
stuff
}
NPCs can use the normal teleport locations? Interesting :D I didn't know.

Thanks so much for that - I got the Scribe onto the GM Add Menu. Curiously though the scribe sells books and Maps(?) but not scrolls so I guess I need to go change the relevant Shoplist. :D

I will! :)

I also finally got to buy a pen but when I double clicked it it gave me the "You can't think of a way to use ... blah! blah!" message so I looked through the dfn files for a scribes pen but couldn't find one. Does this mean that inscription is broken?

Hmm it might mean that you need to use the skill directly instead of the pen & ink item. If the inscription-skill is a "usable" skill, that is. I can't remember.
