What is the recommended Ver of ultima online to start with?
Downloaded the latest uox3 all in one
I started with renaissance out of the box and uorice
The first problem cannot use tools i.e.. hatchet, shovel, saw... crashes server
I patched UO to just before Ninja
Old problem persists and a new problem appeared new accounts are not possessed at startup or world save and the entries in the accounts file are deleted at shutdown.
I patched uo to current ver no change.
I tried uo gateway because uorice stooped working no change.
what should i try next?
1st time user having troubles !

I use the latest versions of UO:AOS (2D) as well as UO:LBR (3D), and that seems to work fine. Not sure what's up with your UOX3 problems, but try the following:
Make sure you have the latest version of UOGateway as well, then redownload the all-in-one package and unzip it to a clean folder. Change nothing other than the path to the DATADIRECTORY in UOX.INI (make sure it points to your UO folder), then start up UOX3.
Login using admin/admin as username and pass, after starting UO using UOGateway with encryption removal enabled - connect to 127.0.0.1,2593.
Try double-click a hatchet, shovel, saw, hammer, etc. and tell me if it still crashes.
Also, to add new accounts and have UOX3 read them, add the new accounts in the newaccounts.adm using the format USER=username, password for each new account. Make sure to press enter after the last account you add, or UOX3 won't read it. When you next startup UOX3, it will add those accounts to accounts.adm.
If you want to edit accounts.adm manually, do it while the server is down - then the changes will not be reverted when server shuts down.

OK latest and greatest clean loaded and tested. 2 networks, 4 CPU’s, 3 OS.
Same result!
The creating new accounts problem is a red herring this works fine as long as the server don't crash. Apparently if the server is not shut down cleanly it doesn't remember the new accounts, this does make sense.
The problem of using crafting tools is still there the lumberjack hatchet is the best example. Equip it and double click it and bang the server is down.
In 2000 and XP at least you get an error message in 98 2nd you get nothing.
While trying different versions of UO other tools work sometimes in one combination then not in others.
Where do I go from here?

Are you logon as admin? If so some craft tools seem to work: like mining is ok as long as you don't equip the tool, and blacksmithing but only to a point most of the menu's for item selection are blank or repetitive (as describe by "imagieif" in their post). Carpentry only lets you pick chairs and you don’t get any after. Tinkering gives one menu that looks ok all others submenus are blank. I will test other skills and provide more feedback.
Try any of the above as Joe regular player and crash.
I am picking on lumberjacking because I have to create a character that has the skill in their first three picks to get a hatchet in the first place and that it crashes for admin too.
Do you practice what you preach and assume the role of a noob and down load the same stuff we do on a clean machine to ensure no spill over of fixes in developmental state?

I have tried logged in as both admin and normal player (on two different accounts), and I'm still not experiencing the crashes.
The next version of UOX3 does contain some fixes for crafting menus though, as well as dfn-fixes for some of the tools which weren't working (but still didn't crash UOX3 for me), like axes not working for lumberjacking - so perhaps that'll fix your crashes too. Shouldn't be too long until it's out.
Ingame, try doing 'SET TYPE 216 on your hatchet/axe before attempting to chop wood. If it then works, add TYPE=216 to all the axes in UOX3\DFNDATA\ITEMS\GEAR\WEAPONS\axes.dfn.

hey the "set type 216" worked. boy do you have to get close to chop
now I tried to make kindleing i guess i have to wait for the update with the fixes to the crafting menus.
I am new to starting a uox server as you can tell. All the player characters end up in the same spot a bend in the road east of what would be bree not in the city selected I have checked the starting location in the config and they look ok any thoughs or is this FAD.
