Customization

I need the opinion of a UOX3 veteran. If I wanted a completely customizable emulator (to the point almost anything is possible), is this the one to use. I noticed a lot of files are in javascript, so I'm thinking it must be pretty flexible.

In between the javascripting engine and UOX3's open source, "almost anything" is possible. But that's true for other programs as well, and seeing as there are ones out there with more current functionality and less bugs - UOX3 may not be your best choice.

That might sound strange coming from me, but if I don't say that someone else most certainly will, so let's just get that out of the way straight away.

You're welcome to use UOX3 if you want, though, and personally I find the javascripting engine easier to use than the scripting engines of other emus. Preferences and opinions rule this world, so you'll have to make one of your own. =)

POL is superb if you are looking for something that is customized via scripts, but it is closed-source. Even so, almost everything can be scripted in it.

To achieve complete control, however, having access to the source of the server is required. There are a number of open-source servers. Most of them belong to what I call the “UOX” family – all derivatives of UOX and therefore bound by its license. These include UOX, UOXClassic, LoneWolf, WolfPack (I believe this one has been completely re-written, so it does not fall under a true UOX-derivative, but it did get its start there), etc. In fact, pretty much every mainstream open-source C/C++ emulator can trace its roots back to UOX (there are a few exceptions, though).

If you like C#, I believe RunUO has become open-source, as well. Personally, I hate the language and therefore the emulator, and consider the RunUO community and its leaders not to be worth my time. It does seem to be the most popular emulator, though.
