Okay, I can't get UOX3 to work on Linux so, I broke down and loaded Windows onto a machine (just to get this going) but, I immediately got stopped again by the Map Size problem.
Is there a patch yet for the 'Map To Big' problem?
Map Size fix?

The CVS version has the "map to big"-problem fixed, so if you are willing to download and compile the current source yourself, that will fix the problem. The reason why we haven't released this as a new version of UOX3 yet is because there are some things we need to finish up first, both source-wise and script-wise.
Note that in addition to downloading the actual uox3 source and compiling that, you will also have to download the updated script-files, most importantly the "dfndata/maps/maps.dfn" file, which holds data about the map-files UOX3 is supposed to load.
The following thread might be of assistance if you want to do this yourself instead of waiting for the next released version:

I've never compiled under windows but, I'll take a whack at it....
BTW, can I take this moment to whine for a bit more Linux development?
The reason I prefer Linux for servers is:
1) It's faster then Windows.
2) My always connected Linux servers have yet to be infected whereas I can't say the same for my old windows server.
Please, more Linux support . I'd love to help out but a PERL/BASH scripter won't do you guys much help.

I'd love for UOX3 to have better linux support, however in order to do so we need a linux community, or at least a committed developer who knows linux.
I barely have the time for what I manage to squeeze in, let alone to learn an entirely different OS, get UOX3 compiling on it, and then maintain support for it.

With so many other UO server projects dead/dying, we, the masses, do appreciate your work! THANK YOU for your time, effort & labor on UOX3.
As for us Linux guys, maybe if we mention LINUX enough in the forums, some LINUX savant will run across UOX3 on a web search and bless us with his/her support.
If nothing else, I may try to run it under WINE.
For web spiders: LINUX LINUX LINUX SLACKWARE LINUX LINUX DEBIAN LINUX LINUX GENTOO LINUX LINUX SUSE LINUX

if the project accepted linux as an equal, and therefore didn't accept changes unless they worked on both (and took the effort to understand what didn't work on linux), once a "linux" guy was on the project.
UOX3 has had linux guys (I was one of them), and one of the reasons they have left (there have been others), is the other devs did a windows approach, and left it for the linux guy to fix for linux (so linux was the "second" class citizen). It also basicaly meant linux support always trailed, and the linux guy was left with "clean up" work. Instead of actively understanding, just as the linux guy had to for windows, what some the trouble areas where, and ensure they worked or took a shot around it.
Clearly, a lot of that is done today and perhaps not as applicable. But without that linux source to test the validity, it can really be stated to what degree it has been corrected. Not a slam, just saying that affects attraction. Many devs are not as intersested in just being a cleanup "porter" (although some are, but others consider it be treated as an after thought) versus an equal (if decidated to make it linux as much as windows code acceptance wise).
So that is a reputation that has followed UOX, that may affect its attraction and contnued attraction (versus just a one time port effort) to linux. Although the current devs do a far better job of considering linux then the project has in the past.
