A few questions and a brief history

Post by Zitch »

Hi, I'm amazed to see this (if it is indeed what I think it is).

A few years ago someone told me there were prvt UO servers out there, but I was not sure if you could 1: trust them or 2: that they'd be up for any length of time.

Anyways I'm assuming you can create a custom shard with full control on all the variables... player rules, drops, spawns, everything!

This interests me greatly because back when UO was a great game I was completely hooked.
Then slowly over time it became watered down... some was good, (house rules mainly) but most was bad IMHO.

They killed PvP, disabled thieves, messed up the skills system (some I understand but players should not have total control over skills... I could devote an entire topic stating my case on skills)

Anyways my history.
I played Atlantic for 3 yrs quit and came back for a couple more, then quit for good.... Also played the Hardcore shard for a couple years (forget the name).

I loved UO because of the economy and adventure.
When skills were tougher to master a GM smithy was respected.
A GM scribe (before the med skill) was also... as well as most of the others. GM swords never did impress many.

I spent hours in Brit by the mage tower selling my wares.
Had about 4 shops. (and my good friend also had a few so we had a good market going).

As for adventure, you may have been everywhere in UO but every time you stepped out your door, you'd never know what to expect.
Even just wandering your local woods could be very hazardous (but exciting).

I had a good thief, so town stealing was always a fun way to pass the time.
Back when they first introduced stealth, burglary became a new and very thrilling excersise.
At that point the game was almost perfect.
You had rules to inplace to defend against thieves.
PvP was pretty basic although some bugs/exploits existed.
Skills did not have up down arrows and locks.
You could own one house per character.

I was happy and could have done with no change from that point on.

I'm hoping someone somewhere has a populated shard up that is close to what i've described. (i'd like to know).

At any rate or at least, describe what this is all about?
Creating the best shard for each individual?
If so why can't OSI do that?
I'm curious what the objective is here?

ok well done posting guess i'l browse a bit. :)

The best place to find a UO Server is by downloading the UOGateway client.

UO Gateway will automatically setup your client to connect to any server you set it up to connect to (or displayed on it's server list).

Personally, I have played on a server known as "Defiance" This server has one login for 3-4 different types of servers (an AOS, a UO:R, and a T2A server at least). Most servers will automatically create an account for you when you login, otherwise you will need to visit their websites to signup for an account to play.

Overall the UO Emulation community is quite large and thriving. Sadly most of these servers do not run UOX3, but we are constantly improving our software and perhaps one day that will change. You will find most people involved in the community have similar stories and experiences with UO, thus why we are still around. :)

The objective of these projects must be to allow people to play UO the way THEY want to, and be joined by likeminded people forming new communities away from the infernal "EA employees" and their constantly changing rulesets :P

There's a shard for everyone, whether you're a diehard PvPer, a hardcore RPer, or any mix inbetween. The only trouble is finding the perfect shard, because there are so many out there =)

Personally I'm trying to make a shard which isn't really "UO" in any sense of the word, simply a different game using the same client :P
