Why won't UOX3 read my map/static files?

If UOX3 fails to start up because it is unable to load the map/static files, it could be due to a number of different reasons. Here are some of those reasons, with potential solutions:

The DATADIRECTORY path in UOX.INI is incorrect
  • If this path is incorrect, UOX3 cannot find the UO map files, and will fail to load them.
Potential solution:
  • Enter a valid path to a UO client folder or another folder with the required data files (maps, statics, tiledata, multis).

You've provided UOX3 with the path to a very old UO client
  • On newer Windows versions, those old UO clients (like the LBR client, v 3.0.x) can get installed with incorrect access permissions, which could cause UOX3 to be unable to read files like map#.mul, statics#.mul, etc. It might also prevent you from renaming/copying/deleting files from the UO folder without using Administrator overrides.
Potential solution:
  • Assign correct file access permissions for the UO client folder, subfolders and all files within. Right click on the folder, hit Properties, go to Security. If this tab lists just a single "Everyone" group/user name, click the Advanced button, change the owner to your current Windows user, and then add the correct Permission entries. To see what those correct Permissions entries actually are, check the same Properties window for another folder on your drive that you don't have any issues with (like a more recent installation of UO), and use those as a guide.

The files are inaccessible because another application has locked them by opening them with exclusive priority
  • Some applications (map editing tools?) might open the files in exclusive mode, locking them and preventing access by any other applications until they are closed and relinquish the lock.
Potential solution:
  • Close any other open applications that might be accessing the files in exclusive mode.
