Hello UOX3 community,
I created an account in late November, but I haven't had a chance to mess around with UOX3 yet. Using this post to greet the community and say that I look forward to this experience; as I've never messed with server emulation in the past.
I've been reading over the forum threads and I've noticed a lot of new users expect OSI-like world files. I'm not one of those users and like how I could use UOX3 to create custom content. I'm in my 30's and haven't messed with Ultima Online since 1997-1998, but after reading some posts from the developers on this project; I think some of us are more interested in custom than OSI-like and I think I'm going to like it here.
I have some background in C++ but I've never messed with Javascript; something I plan to delve into soon. I do know of other Ultima Online Emulators, but I like how UOX3 is simplistic to install and I'm not too concerned with the absence of the newer skills like Ninjitsu because they weren't implemented when I shelled out money to OSI.
I'm not much of a forum poster. I like staying in the shadows and usually ask questions through forum private messages or IRC.
Anyways, I just wanted to give everyone a greet and I hope to contribute something meaningful to this project and meet new friends along the way.

Welcome!
with a C++ background, you will find JavaScript easy enough! The true ability to customize comes from delving into the source-code. That's where my skills are lacking, sadly. What I wouldn't give to try and re-vamp the combat engine! Not that UOX3's engine is bad...it's actually really quite good, but I've never been a fan of the OSI's combat, the biggest weak-spot in UO, in my opinion.
But then again, I design my shard for custom quests for three or four players, OSI was designed for thousands at a time. So it is what it is.
You will like UOx3. I'd highly recommend starting with the default world files to decorate the world and get it functional and go from there. If not, you will be overwhelmed with simply how much there is to re-add. Remember, the default world-files comprise hundreds of hours and over years of modifications to get right. My shard is highly modified, but I did start with the default world files.
Then I'd suggest downloading Xuri's world-builder. It makes it really easy to add custom content and is the only way to "mass decorate." There is a way to "freeze" is modifications into new *.mul files, which helps immensely with loading, but you have to make sure to sync those across players and my shard players are so small in number I don't worry about it.
The biggest issue you are going to find with UOx3 is that it is extremely functional. Why is this an issue? Because the forum is pretty much dead compared to the days when it was being heavily coded..

@stranf
I doubt a re-vamp combat engine would get approved into the official UOX3 release, but maybe we could fork it. PM me sometime with your thoughts. I think a combat engine based on a d20 system would be interesting.
How long have you hosted your shard? I think a private shard with a few friends is the way I'd go as well. Not many public UOX3 shards from what I can tell.
I have been using the default map file until I get used to UOX3, but eventually I want to start a custom map. I've been reading Ryandor's Forum and it has been helpful.
Well, here's to hoping the forum becomes alive again. I need friends to collaborate with.

My cousins and I have been playing since I joined, so 2006? We didn't play much in '13 and '14 for various reasons, but it wasn't UOx3's fault. The engine is rock solid.
I should have some time to get back into it over the new year's break, so I'll try to remember what my thoughts were on the combat. It's not that Uox3 is bad, it's that I've always thought OSI's combat was boring to begin with, and it hasn't "aged" any better.
Anything would be a good, a D20 would be nice. Something that you could simplify that would add some strategy and a little fear to the combat.
Rather than sit in combat mode, get a sandwhich, come back and loot the hordes of low-level baddies you slew, or just the one-hit-and-die from the high level baddies. Something in between would be great.
