Let's predict the future

Post by Puck »

I'm slapping together something that makes crystal balls (occasionally) tell fortunes. Well, what they do is just pick a random message every now and then upon being used. So far it works alright, but I'm craving for more:

What would really be sweet was if the crystal balls actually were right with their prophecies. So I pondered a bit and noticed there's a "luck" stat. reading up on it, I have to say, I'm neither sure whether this is actually implemented and working in UOX, nor am I actually sure what it does.

But this could be the easy way out: when you get a positive message, raise luck on the user for a certain amount of time, for instance. On the other hand, if luck doesn't work, I could just do it with the three "normal" stats - This wouldnt be as cool, since those stats arent so "obscure" and players will quickly make the connection between ball and effect, and even if i was crafty enough to hide the system messages that tell you about the stat change, there is still the status screen. Same with luck, but at least over here, me and the few other players have no clue what luck actually does, so it stays a bit mystical :D Also, when tinkering with the normal stats, I fear I would break things, if its only stat gain through skill use.

Something else I could think off would be to put "free" buffs or debuffs on the user. I havent looked at this at all, but this would only make sense if those actually lasted a bit longer. But this sounds doable.

Would there be any other (easy to pull off, since I'm still majorly clueless and only slowly learning) way to make prophecies more than they usually are, namely "empty promises"?

Any input appreciated.

Luck was a relatively new feature added in UO, and I don't think we ever added the property to characters in UOX.

Well, what you're working with sounds like real life prophesies already :)

Yeah, would be cool if you figure out something that simulates it.

However, Tolkien's Palantiri had a different effect, they could see through another Palantir. That's the way I'm thinking of going. Each unique ball sees through the "eye" of a specific ball. I have no idea if that's possible but if it is I'll post my results. (suggestions anyone?)

Sounds like the old 'V'iew Gem comamnd from U4. Not sure if those kind of gems are in UO myself..

Since you brought the old crystal ball topic back to life, how about a crystal ball that displays your tweets from tweeter? ;)
