Backpack contents hidden on machine change

I have my server and a laptop.
I created my character on my laptop and then later went to edit scripts on the server only to find the item i was going to work on wasn't in my pack.

my pack was empty. so I went back to my laptop and all my items were back. I possessed a character from the client on the server, crashed my client, (don't try to possess a horse) reloaded nd my pack was empty. back to laptop all my stuff was back in my pack.

Is this some kind of client serial number issue with the backpack ownership routine?
