Loosing karma when killing creatures with 0 karma

Every time I kill an animal or npc with 0 karma I get the message that I've lost a little karma. This seems to effect npcs who don't even have karma scripted

Do you have any concrete examples of this? I just killed a dog, and got fame (since it has FAME=300 set) - but didn't lose any karma even though it has no karma-tag in the DFNs.

Great Hart, Hinds and cows. Whether or not karma is actually lost I'm not certain but I see the message that I've lost a little karma after killing one.
