Suppose at some point I want to use an earlier version of my shared folder, but keep the characters... how would I go about it?
Right now I'm tooling around with the character Viewer, and ... well... either I'm doing it wrong or it's a little more complicated than I'd expect.
I mean, exporting them works just fine, but it seems when I try to put them back in a "fresh" shared folder, I'd have to manually adjust the serials. Amidoinitrong?
edit: also, after importing them into the fresh shared folder and adjusting the serials in the account files/folders... everybody can log in using their characters, in the fresh world... but all but the admin account cannot pass spawn region borders, it seems...
How do I backup characters the easy way?

Hm. Glancing at this post I thought to myself "AHA! Finally an opportunity to point someone in the direction of the Character Viewer!" but it seems you beat me to it.
I'll have to check closer into the issues you're having with it when I get home from work, though, as it's been too long since I used the program myself!

I've tinkered around with the character export, and it seems I've been doing it wrong.
After playing with imported charactes for a few hours the server will crash, and not stop doing so. I am pretty sure it has something to do with how I import/export characters. Cleaning out the shared folder stops the endless crash-loop. (In case anybody is interested, I'll zip it up and upload it somewhere. It's not big at all.)
Now, again, assume we're toying around with the world, and at some point we want it "cleaned up" again, using the defaultworld files in the downloads section is an alright starting point.
Do I extract the characters from the old shared folder, and save them as 0.0.wsc which I use to overwrite the more or less empty 0.0.wsc that comes with the default world files? no matter how I go about it (and there are several ways to screw this up, believe me, I've managed
) I always need to adjust the character serials in the accounts afterwards.
Right?
It's not that self explanatory for somebody as clueless as me
