shortly to re-boot the server after a long hiatus.

After reviewing the excellent work done by the community (kudos guys, btw), I have a couple questions that make me feel like a newb again.

1) Looks like up to High Seas Client works with UOx3 if I keep the original MUL files from an older client so Uox3 can read the maps. Right?

2) If I decided to use High Seas, does this mean UOx can work with the new client, or is there still the classic 2D client that is only supported? Last time I was here, the new rage (or target of vile attacks) was the high-res Kingdom Reborn client which the Community would not support due to more effective uses of their rescources.

3) How functional are the ships and new naval features of High Seas on Uox3 (using either client?)

Basically, what I'm taking a lot of words to ask, is: Is it worth it to me to "upgrade" to High Seas or should I continue to use my current 2D client which stable and does what we need it to do?

Thanks guys, great work!

Heya stranf, welcome back! :)

1) Ideally UOX3 and the client should run on the same version of data, since there could be differences that are not easy to notice that could create hard-to-debug bugs or problems. If your client version is between 7.0.24.2 and 7.0.25.0 - UOX3 can read the mapfiles in their .uop wrapped file format. If the client version is higher than that, UOX3 won't be able to read them and you will need to use either older versions of the map files or a version of the mapfiles that have been converted from the new .uop format to classic .mul format.

2) Support for the enhanced client is experimental at best. I would advise against using it, as UOX3 is currently lacking support for the new ways of handling gumps in that client, for one thing.

3) UOX3 only supports the old method (and old type of ships) of boating, unfortunately.

Argh! Avast, so no pirate's life for me, eh?

Ah, well.

So, in your opinion, is there any feature set/enhancements that Uox3 can take advantage of that would warrant the pain of downloading, upgrading, and finding ways to decrypt a newer client?

I think I'm on 6.0.1h or some other earlier client, it was a modestly patched from the base 10 year anniversary CD. I do know Trammel/Falucca have two different maps, and I have the Avatar Armor and dragonscale armor models. Other than that, it's a pretty basic; yet stable, 2D client.

Some possible reasons for wanting to upgrade to a newer client version (if not necessarily the very latest):

In general
* Easier to find (and direct potential players towards) legal copies of more recent client versions

Stygian Abyss (6.0.14.2 to 7.0.8.2)
* New locations
--> Ter Mur
--> Stygian Abyss Dungeon
--> Underworld
* New skills (supported by UOX3, but not implemented - needs scripting)
--> Imbuing
--> Mysticism
--> Throwing
* Various new monsters (~50, see main link for details)
* Various new items

High Seas (7.0.9.0 and above)
* New boats/smooth boat movement (not supported by UOX3 yet, unfortunately)
* New Locations:
--> Sea Market
* Couple of new monsters (Scalis Enforcer, Charybdis)
* Various new items (~36 new types of fish, for instance o_O)

However, there's also the good ol'e saying to consider.... "Don't fix what's not broken!". So weigh the pros and cons carefully :)
