RunUO vs. Uox3, what's the difference?

For everything not directly related to UOX3; Such as official UO, other emus, and everyday chatter about stuff. And whatnot.

RunUO vs. Uox3, what's the difference?

Post by stranf »

The actual reason why I'm using UOx3 is because it was the first emulator that came up when I did a google search for UO Offline. I remember back in the late nineties trying to get what I thought was the first one, UOx running, so I did a google search for "ultima offline, UOx" and got UOx3.

Overall I am pleased with the community (I wish it was bigger) and the customizability of the server. I really have no reason to switch as I'm getting used to .js and .dfns and have a lot of GM scripts that are important for the scripts I run.

But it seems that RunUO is the most popular, maybe even LoneWolf. (I tried to get LoneWolf running once back when Uox3 magic didn't work, but never got it running to try it.)

So what is the difference between Uox3, RunUO, and LoneWolf?

Why do you stay with Uox3?

I wish the community was bigger myself as well, and it's true that RunUO is more popular (and even more powerful), but I guess the reason why I've stayed with UOX3 comes down to history and personal preferences;

Sometimes you wanna go...
where everybooody knows your naaaame...
and they're always glad you caaame...
you wanna be where you can see - our troubles are all the same...
you wanna be where everybody knows your name.
You wanna go where people know - people are all the same....
you wanna go where everybody knows your name......

Oh, and I don't think LW is all that much more popular than UOX3. I'm basing that assumption on the number of registered users in the forums; they have 426 versus our 339, but we have more users registered this year - and the their users are spread out from November 2001 until today, whilst the current incarnation of our forum didn't start until March 2004.

I'm not really the right person to answer your question though, seeing as I'm a die-hard UOX3 fan and won't ever even consider using anything else. Either it's done with UOX3, or I don't do it at all. I've got my reasons. :P

Well I'm not considering a change either. The smaller community size has its advantages such as if I have an idea I want implemented, their is a greater chance that someone will help me out.

I've moved on from the "setting up the world" phase to actually enjoying the game, and I see no reason, no matter if RunUO is more powerful, to start from an empty world again and figure out how to do all the custom .dfns and scripts I've already created can be put into a new EMU.

I don't think any one factor can be attributed to RunUO's popularity. Several things lead up to it being the most active community, and it didn't just pull users from the UOX3 userbase, but also the Sphere userbase, which was quite large once apon a time.

At this point, RunUO is popular because it's popular, if you will. Once a product reaches "critical mass" in its given market, its new adoption rate becomes less a result of advanced technology and more because of name recognition and personal recommendation.

Don't get me wrong. I have played on several RunUO servers, and it does have an advantage over UOX3. If nothing else, it seems to be less buggy overall (at least those that exist aren't quite as blatant as many of our bugs). However UOX3's bugginess in the past is far more responsible for the original growth of RunUO than its current bugginess is for RunUO's continuing popularity.

As for why I use UOX3, there are several reasons.

I started using it because it was the most popular open-source emulator at the time.

I continued using it because even before I knew how to program it was very easy to make the changes that I was most concerned with (scripting).

I fell in love with the community (at least a part of the community, not so much why whining, flaming 10-year-olds).

I learned how to program by working on UOX3 and under the mentorship of EviLDeD and Abaddon (Maarc), which gave me an even deeper attachment to the program itself, as well as the community / dev team.

Finally, in more recent years I've been able to hone my skills at programming by bug-fixing and overhauling subsystems within UOX3 as time allowed.

So even if UOX3 were barely functional at this point, you couldn't convince me to switch. The reality is I haven't "played" on a UOX3 server since EviLDeD originally hosted oR, and I haven't played on any UO server (RunUO or otherwise) in at least 2 years.
