need some help with some DFN stuff

Post by mertens »

so, heres what I'm trying to do
I'm trying to turn UO into a kinda country resident evil thing.
and that involves 2 things:
lots of zombies and spawners, this i can do/am doing now
the second is guns.
now I'm not sure if its possible to add your own graphics and what not but I'm not looking at that yet (although a yes/no would be good for the sake of my asperations)
so, i think I've got the basic idea
i can rename arrows and bolt into rifle rounds and pistol rounds
this is reletivly easy
i can rename bows and stuff to M4 and M9,
this is also pretty easy

the problem is how do i use a diffrent 'picture' for the item? i.e. make a rifle look like a black staff but still work like a crossbow.

in other games this would be a simple art file asighnment...
but with this, i havent a clue what to do

could anyone give me some pointers?

You are correct. It is a simple art assignment. But it is also a little tricky because of the third party software required to edit the UO .mul files (which control sounds and art).

I've played with it, and it is tedious. It also requires a good artist to make the paperdoll graphics look good. Also, I am not sure how this will work on the 3d client, but I know it will work on 2d.

I tried once, wanted a "pirate" era world, where all I did basically was "cut" the bow part off of the arrows for old-school guns. (The heavy crossbow looks sweet this way), and I painted the black pearl graphic grey and used it as "ammo", it looks very much like mini-balls.

Then downside is, is your weapons will still use the crosbow animations in the 2d world. You would have to edit the animation files which is not a simple art change. I am not sure how to handle arrows flying at targets. I chose to leave my crossbows as is. So they had mini-balls for ammo in the inventory, but in the game world they still looked like crossbows.

www.ryandor.com is a good forum for people who edit the .mul files. They will also give you the third party utilities.

Since you are editing the .mul files, this is a UO issue, not a Uox3. You should save a backup of your mul files, and you would need to distribute all the mul files to your friends so they can log in with the correct art.

Editing the .dfn entry is the easy, and some would say, the fun part.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
